Light Music Album Release with Awkward TerribleRuth B8r Ginsburg
9 pm, 21+, $7

Mad Planet is honored to host the release of Light music’s debut full-length, ‘Ocean’s Daughter.’

Electronic rock outfit Light Music has taken Milwaukee’s stages and airwaves by storm over the last few years. The band was born out of beloved group The Four Hundred, and lead singer Brendan Benham honed his experimental chops as a past member of esteemed locals Collections of Colonies of Bees and Altos. The studio trio / live quartet has used the resulting cohesiveness and experimental mentality to create something both unique and infectious with Light Music. This sound gained stand-alone singles airplay on Radio Milwaukee, with Amelinda Burich explaining its appeal on the station’s website: “The members of Light Music explore classical and psychedelic-pop influences with a definite footing in rock, swirled in with synthesizers and driving guitars.”

The press followed, with Milwaukee Record calling them “one of the most promising new Milwaukee bands of 2014.” Record label The Record Machine took notice, signing Light Music to a deal in April. Thus, the arrival of ‘Ocean’s Daughter’ was imminent, and fans were waiting eagerly. They got a satisfying taste at the end of June when PopMatters premiered the first single, “Petrichor.” On September 5th, fans will be fully satiated as Light Music will formally release their debut LP.

Joining them are chiptune noise-rockers Awkward Terrible.a trio that seamlessly blends 8-bit elements into their noise rock sound; rather than feeling like a defining shtick, it perfectly aids. For years, Christoph Crimson (guitar, bleep bloops, vocals) and Sam Decimus (drums, vocals) have mesmerized crowds by managing to make a whole lot of wonderful noise for only two people. However, last year they enlisted bassist Sam Gehrke of Soul Low to make Awkward Terrible an even more unstoppable, Megazord-esque power. That power was felt in full force on July’s surprise release of the Badlands EP.

Ruth B8r Ginsburg is more than just a great name, though it is immensely appropriate for a group of seven powerful women with probably at least as many years of experience playing in bands between the seven of them as RBG has on the Supreme Court. The outfit is composed of members of popular Milwaukee bands like Mortgage Freeman, , Airo Kwil, New Boyz Club, & Bo Triplex and His Beautiful Band. They made their debut just last month to a packed crowd.

Come celebrate the release of what is sure to be the first of many excellent albums from Light Music!
